Part Five: Manage a Portfolio, Not a Parade — Chapter 9: Business Outcomes Are the Portfolio

Keep a real “not now” list

A deferred idea needs a reason and a condition for returning to it. This record helps you keep worthwhile possibilities available without allowing an unexplained backlog to claim attention every quarter.

For each deferred opportunity, write what must become true. For example:

  • a data source becomes reliable;
  • a process owner is assigned;
  • a contract expires;
  • volume reaches a stated threshold;
  • a risk control exists;
  • another experiment resolves a dependency.

Name who will notice the change or when the condition will be checked. At review time, examine that condition. An idea doesn't become stronger simply because it's been waiting a long time. If it now deserves reconsideration, update the comparison using the new facts.
