Part Two: Map Before You Move — Chapter 4: Appropriate Maturity
A six-level ladder
Use this operational ladder:
- None — the capability does not exist in a dependable form.
- Individual — a person can perform it, often using personal knowledge or tools.
- Approved — the organization has accepted a method, tool, or policy.
- Integrated — the capability is built into normal workflow.
- Connected — it uses relevant data and coordinates across systems or teams.
- AI-native — learning, generation, prediction, or intelligent action is fundamental to how the capability works.
The labels describe current operational reality, not ambition. A pilot does not move a process to level five. A vendor promise does not count. Score what people can depend on today.
