Current, appropriate, and gap

This assessment helps you decide whether a capability needs attention after you've described the work. For each relevant cell, record its current maturity, the level appropriate for the business now, and the evidence supporting both judgments. Use observations from the map and check the description with the people who rely on that capability.

A current level of one and an appropriate level of three gives you a question worth investigating. It doesn't automatically authorize a project. If both are two, the capability may already meet the need. Levels 2 or 3 are often enough.

Carry any meaningful gap into your list of opportunities, with its reasons and unknowns attached. Then compare it with the other things the company could do.
