Chapter 3: The 5x5 Business Map

Most AI inventories are organized by department or by tool. Both views are incomplete.

Departments hide work that crosses boundaries. Tool inventories tell you what the company owns, not what the business can do. The 5x5 map creates a shared view of business systems and the capabilities supporting them.

The Compass map puts five business systems on one axis and five operating elements on the other. Their intersections create twenty-five cells: small enough to discuss, broad enough to expose patterns.
